While I'm not privy to the entire gay world, I am very well versed in the world of theatre. In that, it drew me in, held my attention, and I related to the characters.Yes, as one reviewer remarked, there are a lot of grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors to be found throughout the book, which surprised me because I know this author on a personal and professional level. Yet, despite the above-mentioned pitfalls, it's a clever story and much of what takes place within the world of Broadway felt spot on.While you may find the main character of Jericho distasteful, he's full-bodied, and three dimensional and, from personal experience, I can honestly say that the world of theatre is chock full of Jerichos. The idea of building a story around the creation of the Flash Mob is intriguing - and quite creative.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This Hot Little Number Cooks!By Kathleen ShaputisKompes throws you into a New York world few of us have the delightful chance to know. Passionate characters and "heated" encounters make this an interesting read of today's lifestyle among performers and entertainers.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful.More Than A Bit Of A DisappointmentBy Alan Arthur Katz"Flash Mob" didn't work for me. I had just finished reading Mr. Kompes' other book in this series, "The Middleman", and was so impressed by the author's talent that I couldn't wait to read another. Unfortunately, "Flash Mob" was a bit of a disappointment.First, the story is paper thin. An aging Broadway director/choreographer (the Great Jericho - only one name required) discovers a hot young multi-talented boy about to give up on his dream of starring in a Broadway show, hires him for his revival of 42nd Street, mentors him and moves him into his apartment. It's a fairly creepy relationship because the boy is only 21, Jericho is well into his 50s, and they continuously skirt an intense sexual relationship, without ever consummating it.While all that is going on, Jericho invents the Flash Mob, combining some of his best dancers with talented amateurs in unexpected locations around New York, with neither schedule nor notice. One of the amateur dancers happens to be a gay Afghani terrorist-in-training (actually, he makes bomb parts in his apartment), whose only dream is to become a chorus boy in a Broadway musical. Are you getting this - a tenuous relationship between Middle East terrorism and a Broadway chorus line that seems to stretch credibility beyond all boundsThere were two major disappointments for me in this book. First, the characters. I found Jericho to be fairly reprehensible, leveraging his fame and power to pick up a succession of young, hot Broadway wannabes for three-week sexual relationships. It's really a form of prostitution, or at the very least, a repugnant casting couch - the dirty, old, powerful director luring hot young lads to his bed by preying on their hope of becoming rich and famous stars. And Jericho can't quite seem to figure out why it's not quite fulfilling D'oh!My second disappointment was the writing. "The Middleman" proves that Mr. Kompes is a writer to be reckoned with. His talent is undeniable, his pacing, description, settings, even his sex scenes, among the best I've read in gay fiction. How is it then, that he comes off, on the pages of this book, as being only quasi-literateThe spelling, grammar, inconsistencies and unintelligible gibberish you encounter, as you read this book, is downright stunning. Mr. Kompes, according to his bio, has a B.A. in English Literature and an MS in Education. How did he get those degrees without learning how to spell, how to use apostrophes, and how to write complete and intelligible sentencesYes, this is a real bugaboo for me. The further you get into this book, the worse the editing gets. Had the beginning been as bad as the latter half, I would have returned it for a refund. It's just not fun to me to get "stuck" on a sentence, with a baffled look on my face, wondering what the hell the writer is talking about. It's the writer's job to communicate with me. A novel is not supposed to be a crossword puzzle. It's not the reader's job to decode and decipher missing words and sentence fragments.I'm not exaggerating. Much of gay fiction (especially self-published gay fiction) seems to be rife with bad editing, but this one was really up there with some of the classics. Mr. Kompes, no young fit hot boy has "taught" muscles, though he may have "taut" ones. "Your" is not a contraction of "you are", "you're" is - and "you're" is not the posessive (as in "you're wallet"). Plurals do not have apostrophes before the final "s" (most of Mr. Kompes' plurals do, however), the past tense of the verb "forbid" has an "e" on the end of it (forbade, not "forbad"), and no one speaks "allowed", they speak "aloud".Sentences need to have subjects and verbs. Nouns usually take articles, such as "a" or "the": "...he'd even given him key.". Things of huge size have "epic proportions", not "epoch proportions", one can "lose" his job, not "loose" it, and Billy's parents, well, its not possible that "their" really freaked out, though it is distinctly possible that "they're" freaked out. Jericho might be "fazed" by something, but not likely "phased" by it, your family lineage is your "descent", not your "decent". It goes on and on and on. To be quite honest, no matter how hard I tried, I never could figure out what the hell this sentence means: "She couldn't wait to that her mother, again", not even from its contextSorry to rave like this, but unless you're willing to decode the sometimes indecipherable grammar and spelling of this book, I don't recommend it. Sometimes, I'm willing to stumble through unforgivable editing if the plot, the power, the emotion and the themes overcome the annoyance and insult of a rough draft sold as a finished book (see my review of Mr. Kompes' "The Middleman", for an example).Unfortunately, "Flash Mob" is just not one of those.See all 6 customer reviews...
