It's a hard subject to tackle because for most when you think sub, you think subservient, docile, passive, willing to obey when commanded kind of person and those aren't usually the kind of men I want to read about and to hear others, they feel the same way, but Lorelei took that challenge and rose to the occasion.When we first met Ronin's sister Shiori (our heroine) in the first book BOUND, one would think wow, what a witch with a capital B, and I guess she could be considered that. She's tough, protective, successful, and likes to be in control. She's definitely used to being the HBIC. I also had her pegged as a Domme. Though honestly I had this gut feeling about her, even though on the surface she comes across as hard-as(s) like her brother, there was that little bit of vulnerability and maybe even insecurity beneath all that toughness and it made me look at her differently once we delved deeper into her character. By the end, I was relieved to have been right because she was worth getting to know. She did have a softer loving side that showed but also through Knox's commitment/love she -- shined. From the start she and Knox had that spark. Usually arguing about the dojo or anything in general because they both pushed each other's buttons (on purpose), but there was always sexual tension there as well. Their banter made for some laughs along the way but it made for some downright hot and sexy scenes which we fans NEED like our next breath. If you haven't read one of Lorelei James's sex scenes you just don't know what you are missing. THE.BEST!After being anxious to see how Lorelei would write a male sub without making him seem weak I was left with NO doubt Knox is ALPHA to the core. Not only ALPHA, but sexy as heck ALPHA. The way their relationship was written was PERFECT. For me it clicked and made total sense.There's so much to dig about this book besides all the steamy sex and love story. For one, it's long as all get-out which is a plus when you're enjoying the story and the characters. Lorelei stayed true to the characters and made me love them more. Second, I enjoyed the changing dynamics with the dojo and all the new people being brought in. Does this mean there are more stories to come I hope to hell so. And last, the dialog. It's really good which is a deal breaker for me if it's not.I admire Lorelei for stepping out, trying something different, almost taboo, putting her flair into it, and as always giving it her all. It's one of my top books so far this year and I hope it's well received by all of those newbies to her and the ones who doubted the male sub topic.Happy Reading!3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.UNRAVELED is a must-read for ALL Lorelei James fans!By JavaGirl129Are you a fan of Lorelei James, but not a reader of BDSM-themed books Do you have concerns about reading UNRAVELED I know I did. I love Lorelei's books, but I'm not a fan of BDSM --not at all. I've read a handful of BDSM books, all recommended by friends whose opinions I respect, but I've come to the conclusion it's just not for me. I can read "BDSM light", but I have my own hard limits--pain and humiliation being the most important. If your thoughts and feelings are similar to mine, I would like to reassure you that you have nothing to worry about with UNRAVELED. I was so relieved to find that most of my concerns were put to rest almost immediately by Knox and Shiori's negotiation prior to beginning their D/s relationship. It turns out that my hard limits and Knox's are nearly identical. Once I had this information, I could relax and enjoy getting to know Knox and Shiori. I already loved Knox from his appearances in the first two books in the Mastered series, BOUND and UNWOUND, but I wasn't as fond of Shiori. I'm happy to say that as their story unfolded and I learned more about her, I understood her and came to love her almost as much as I love Knox. Almost. Open and easy-going, Knox is a talker; the polar opposite of his friend, the taciturn Ronin Black. I loved Knox's relationships with his family and friends, that he wanted a family of his own, and that he was a little lost and searching to find his place.Some readers question whether an Alpha man can be a sexual submissive and still retain the qualities that make him an Alpha. For me, the answer is a resounding YES! The way Lorelei handled this subject, having Knox question his submissiveness, was a brilliant way for the reader to discover right along with him what it means for an Alpha man to be a submissive. For me, this worked beautifully to help me better understand their relationship.The chemistry and sexual tension between Knox and Shiori has been there since day one, and when these two finally get together...well, Lorelei James knows how to write some smoking hot sex scenes and there are plenty here to keep her readers satisfied. The level of emotion was very high for me with UNRAVELED; I was fully invested in Knox and there were a couple of times when I was devastated and truly hurt for him.
