The character development was well done. It was a totally unique premise. But I struggled to finish it. That makes me sad because I really do think it was a good book and would definitely recommend it to others, it just wasn't my thing. This has a lot more to do with my personal preferences, though, than with anything else. It was dark and angsty and totally NOT my brand of catnip. It was really interesting that the first 40% of the book took place in prison and, while there was tension between Briar and Knox, there was certainly nothing romantic or physical going on.Knox was a unique hero because he hadn't just spent several years in prison, he was guilty of a pretty serious crime. The author didn't minimize that and while Knox explains that it wasn't his intention to kill the man, he does think the man deserved to die. It was also interesting to see the very realistic way that life went on for Knox after prison. He was able to lead a relatively normal life but people were wary of him and there were those connected to the dead man that thought he was scum.Briar was definitely the less complex of the two main characters but her background with a father abusive towards her mother made her approach to life and conflict more interesting. The chemistry between the two was palpable and the love scenes were scorching.I only had one actual complaint about the story and that was that they really didn't spend enough time actually getting to know each other to believably fall in love. They spent a lot of time having mind blowing sex but basically one night of true companionship. They did know a lot about the other person's character but not much about their personalities, goals, etc. I think if maybe there had been one less sex scene (usually my favorite part of a romance novel so I can't believe I am saying that) and one more scene getting to know each other it would have been better.Anyway, it looks like Reid will get his story next (instead of North, who I was fascinated with), which I will probably read simply because I am curious how the author will make a genuinely dangerous criminal into a hero. The fact that the heroine will most likely be the First Daughter seems odd but I look forward to it anyway. I just hope I connect more to it than I did this book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Good first book in a series with interesting premise . .By P. ShropshireBriar Davis is a nurse and the typical good girl next door, although she had a turbulent childhood with an abusive father and a mother who stayed with her abuser. She volunteers to assist her doctor-boss at the local penitentiary while they are short handed. At the prison infirmary she meets Knox Callaghan, a tough-looking, tattooed inmate and is strangely drawn to him even though she reminds herself he is a convicted felon and not a man with whom she could have a relationship. But when Knox saves Briar from being raped - or worse - she begins to see him in a different light.Knox is paroled for his actions (he also protected the doctor and the other infirmary nurse, and the doctor used his influence to get him paroled). And when Briar runs into Knox in a convenience store and invites him over for ice cream, well, let's just say they melt the ice cream. But Knox knows they can never have a real relationship; he's a murderer and she's a good girl. Briar knows her sister would never accept Knox.I really enjoyed their story and the sex is HOT. I enjoyed learning Knox's backstory and learning that the murder he committed was somewhat justifiable.I did have a few issues with the plot, however. I find it hard to believe Knox would so easily adjust to freedom. I found Laurel's sudden change of attitude regarding Knox to be extremely abrupt. I found Briar fairly believeable and relatable, though.4 stars. And I'm looking forward to the next book; Reid seems to be a MUCH more hardened criminal that either Knox or North, so I'm eager to see how Ms. Jordan pulls it off.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Absolutely Amazing Page Turner with Scorching PassionBy CustomerI'm such a fan of Sophie Jordan! And she's certainly done it again with this new Devil's Rock series. I never thought I'd want to read a prison-based romance but I read it because it's Sophie Jordan. And I absolutely loved it. Le sigh!Knox is the man behind bars, serving a sentence for a passion-based crime that will tug at your heart strings. Briar is the nurse who volunteers at the prison. When they meet, their chemistry is instant, though their emotional bond takes some time to form. Briar isn't quite open to romance with a criminal and Knox has no interest in a romance period - especially one with a pure-hearted girl like Briar. The intimacy scenes in this one are mind-blowing. The story is a rapid page-turner. The emotions are sweet and raw and powerful. My only complaint is that the pair had very little conversation in this book and I wanted them to get to know each other a little more, hence the four stars. It seemed like it was mostly lust and chemistry and a desperate need that put them together. Still, the romance was believable and they have enough history and time together to make it special. Knox was one of the most fun alpha male guys I've read in a looong time. I absolutely cannot wait for Reid and North's stories - next in the series. All Chained Up recommended if you like: HOT intimacy, alpha protective male, raw consuming passion, push-away love stories.See all 79 customer reviews...
