Why do I know this Because I had an argument with an aged spelling teacher who marked me wrong for spelling it 'recipe'. OK. Enough of my history. This book is fun history itself, and the confident cook will enjoy using it. It's not for the novice (who'd be better with something which stipulates just how much water to start with, how much seasoning, how many calories you end up with, etc.) In my family there was a similar cookbook, long since destroyed, with directions for skinning a hare, cooking stew, making soap, whitening clothes--all in the same pot, if not at the same time.These recipes do not suggest just how many they'll feed. This collection was for the housewife who had to be ready when company dropped in for the week or ten days. There are a lot of wonderful 'stretcher' recipes--for soups and stews, with suggestions how to cook a large haunch of meat and use all that is usable in it for a few days. Some of the recipes I have tried remind me of my mother's cooking and the directions sound familiar: take a good handful of this. Add a couple pinches of that, and my all-time favorite--take a piece of butter the size of a walnut. If one is looking for modern whizzbang recipes, check the publication date on the front page, these are from a different century. The recipes are not difficult, and some of them look very interesting to me, like the chicken pie recipes, and some of the desserts. This is not a "how to" book, it is recipes of different women who contributed their own to the book, so there are different spins on a dish which is fun to see. It's like asking 10 of your friends for their favorite dish recipe. There's one dish with biscuits and gravy that I think many men would appreciate, and I'm going to make that for my hubby. Sure, there are a few old terms, but I don't know some of todays twitter terms, either, it just takes a little looking. I thought a "spider" was a Chinese woven metal strainer, but an older usage of spider as mentioned in this book had me curious. It turned out to be an iron skillet. So why the 'spider'. I looked at antique sales on line. There, on a Griswold cast iron skillet lid was an image of a spider cast into the top. It was a "brand" like saying "Jello", but meaning gelatin dessert if it was Royal brand. Also, Lucca oil, which I guessed was olive oil, and sure enough I found a label on line. So, that adds extra fun for me, but I understand, it's not how to cook learning. As another poster mentioned, the Joy of Cooking cookbook has been printed over 30 times, and modernized. Go with that, tons of recipes and technique. But if you want to wander to the past just a little bit, see what some nice old ladies did, Recipes Tried and True has useable recipes despite some old fashioned terms. They are no fail recipes with simple instructions and no complex steps. It's a great first cookbook for anyone who is just starting cooking. It's also great for Sunday's dinner or dinner with the in-laws.
