I've been looking forward to another installment in the Libète saga for a long time. In the style of his first novel (and subsequent short stories), Oswald unspools the narrative piecemeal by toggling back and forth through the story's timeline. Although this greatly intensifies the sense of mystery, I always struggle with this method of storytelling, since I generally get so into the flow of each current slice of narrative that it's mentally jarring every time the story switches tracks. Still, Oswald uses this method to great effect: the storylines always coalesce into a huge "ah ha!" moment. I have many emotional comments that I'd like to make, but I can't figure out how to make them without dropping spoilers. Sufficed to say that my feelings have feelings at this point. I don't know if this series is for everyone (the Haitian setting, culture, and languages play a huge role in the storytelling, and as I've already mentioned, the narrative devices can prove tough sledding for some readers), but if you invest in these books, they pay back rich rewards. I've come to think of Libète as the Flavia de Luce of Haiti, minus the poison, plus a whole lot of heart. Also:
