She had previously been there after a fall and become intrigued about the life of Lydia Roper, the wife of a wealthy man who had endowed the home before his death in 1921. This is a gentle narrative, interweaving Dean's search for the details of Lydia's life as she takes on the obligation of leading a Bible study group for a small group of very elderly ladies resident there, poor and afflicted with the problems of ageing, yet eager to talk their own stories with Dean as she draws on her experience as a retired teacher to discuss women written about in the Bible. All the time Dean is looking for information about the life of Lydia, frustrating at times, the passage of years leaving only fragments and references for Dean to stitch together. It is an oddly compelling story that remained on my mind for many days after. It's one of the few books that I've put up on my bookshelf that I know I will read again after a season has passed. For there is a time and a reason to read such a book. It evokes the atmosphere of a Southern way of life, a barely remembered gentility, a reminder of the Gospels of Jesus that can bring renewal for those who will take the time to enter Dean Robertson's world. It's a remarkable book, a good book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. After a bad fall in 2012By penny21This is a book about searching and then searching again, looking for roots in history and in stories. After a bad fall in 2012, Dean Roper, a retired teacher, spent 8 long months recovering among elderly women residents of the Lydia Roper Home. At first depressed and withdrawn, she emerged to lead a weekly course and discussion on the Bible as literature. This book is her exploration and memoir of that course, which she continued long after she herself left the Home. At the same time, she began her researches into the founder of the Home, Lydia Roper, bride of a Yankee captain who came to Virginia after the Civil War.I'm not usually a reader of Christian commentary, but I especially enjoyed Roper's musings about the stories of women in the Bible and her descriptions of how the women in her group gradually emerged from shyness or uncertainty to share and pursue their own questions. Often the group read a Bible passage aloud or three times in the course of the discussion; similarly, this book uses gentle, cyclical repetition to return to themes and questions. At times, I felt a little like the way the women in the group must feel, with their fading memories: it was hard to remember which woman member was which, or to keep track of Lydia Roper's various descendants.Robertson writes with understated elegance. Enter this book not with a destination in mind, but with an openness to questions about what we want, what we lose, and what remains.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. What a beautiful book! Looking for Lydia is a story about women, about aging, about history and The Bible. It is history, memoir and theology. But at its heart, this is a story about connections, about the ways we, like Whitman's patient spider, launch filaments out of ourselves to connect to others, often through stories both personal and public. Ms. Robertson suggests that these stories may both anchor us in our world and help us better understand our place in it.See all 23 customer reviews...
