It has extensive lists of translations (into English) of all the major works in tons of languages. The lists are arranged as a sort of literary and historical review of the translations, offering information about the stylistic differences between translations as well as each one's scholarly popularity and subsequent influence. On top of that, it includes several well-selected essays on translation theory that readers, translators, and professors will find interesting and useful.16 of 16 people found the following review helpful.Frustratingly spotty in coverageBy A readerI think this book has two major problems in terms of the skimpiness of coverage in some areas. First, it is entirely inadequate in dealing with certain authors (usually poets) who have been translated into English dozens of times - I think of Homer, Dante, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Rilke, and the ancient Chinese poets collectively. Generally in these cases, the editors all too quickly dismiss any possibility of a comprehensive assessment of most existing translations due to space limitations, choosing instead to consider only a handful of translations to illustrate typical issues in translation. Yet there are relatively few such authors who have had numerous English translators, and giving an extra page or two to those few that have is not going to bulk up the volume that much. After all, a reader's need for the guidance provided by this volume in any given instance probably is in direct proportion to the number of available translations - you do not need a lot of guidance if there are only one or two, but you might if there are 30. The second problem with the book is that most of the expert contributors are British, and most of them seem to have made very little effort to track down translations commonly available in the United States for their consideration. The result is that many translations that are somewhat standard among Americans are not even mentioned. There are few alternatives to this book if you are looking for guidance on available translations, and I am glad to have it - but it is a frustrating volume.15 of 21 people found the following review helpful.one point of viewBy j jay liFor a book of so broad a scope hinted by the title, it's quite natural for the editor(s) to either squeeze short the width of its coverage or sacrifice the depth in its content. Barely do you find both in a single book of such a volume at once. With this in mind, the book is very good in general but caught short in the latter in particular. I cite an example, among others, of the topic on Chinese Literature, with which I am most familiar. The entries what follows is limited, as a whole, to the classical literature translation, a relatively familiar theme that an English language reader may find in other books of the same subject. No account is a bit given of the mordern Chinese literature translation, not even mention of the contemporary one. I found too similar situation in the treatment of the other languages it covers. I felt still it's a great book to have on my bookshelf in the literature category, however, it's hoped that supplement and enhancement of such will be due in future editions. One more thing, the tag price is outrageous.See all 3 customer reviews... English Literature Resources - Literature-Study-Online English Literature Links .
