O’Donnell knows Blackjack Hudson is on the train and planning to steal a large package out of the mail car located near the rear of the train. That large package, wrapped in plain brown wrapping paper, will contain a lot of bank notes. O’Donnell knows Blackjack Hudson snuck onboard the train in Dawson and will sneak right back off the train in Retribution with the package if O’Donnell and his men do nothing.O’ Donnell’s plan is for the trio to ride single file behind the train as it enters a small forest at the edge of the canyon. Then Billy Cole and O’Donnell will jump on board and deal with taking custody of Blackjack Hudson. Mahko will handle the horses and assist with the extraction when everyone is ready. Any guards onboard should be at the front of the train and not worried about anything happening at the rear where the mail is stored. Grey O’Donnell hopes with the length of the train, the dust, and the fact the guards aren’t used to worrying about the mail, that no one will look back and see them. With so few people on the goods train the plan is for no one to know they were ever there. Get in, quietly get their man, and then get out the way they came.The plan was great in theory. It would have worked too if Jasper Roberts hadn’t shown up to cause interference. But, he is there. To make things worse, he is acting as a lawman. Now O’Donnell has another score to settle in The Guns of Retribution by Icy Sedgwick.Plenty of action, detailed characters with considerable backstory, and lots of scene setting details make this western novella a very good read. The author sets the mood quickly and pulls the reader into the world of Bounty Hunter Greg O’Donnell before throwing a number of surprises at the reader. The Guns of Retribution is an exceptionally good western that works from start to finish. Icy Sedgewick is clearly an author to keep an eye on. says I picked this up October 19, 2015. She's been writing critically-acclaimed steampunk for a while now, but in her latest novel from the always-fearless Pulp Press, she treads new ground. And she comes up aces.THE GUNS OF RETRIBUTION is a strong Western full of action, honor, betrayal, and fast guns. Our hero, Gray O'Donnell, is a bounty hunter with a strong sense of justice, on the trail of a criminal named Blackjack Bud Hudson. But his quest takes him a little too close to his old home in the town of Retribution, where some unfinished business in the form of Jasper Roberts awaits. Jasper is a scumbag who's only lately become sheriff of Retribution, and he plans on using his newfound power to make life miserable for Gray--miserable enough that it can only end in a hanging.Sedgwick has clearly done her research--the short novel is laced through with convincing bits of regional and historical asides. But to her credit, she doesn't get bogged down in it. The story moves swiftly through a lot of very playful dialogue and action. There's very little exposition, and that's as it should be.Gray is a very likeable hero; I couldn't help but think he'd get along well with Edward Grainger's Cash Laramie. Over-all, THE GUNS OF RETRIBUTION feels like a single episode in a longer saga, which I hope is an indication of more Gray O'Donnell to come.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Taste the grit of the old westBy Aidan FritzIcy Sedgwick pens this western tale with plenty of atmosphere. The details lend the story a depth that brings to life this western town and places the reader solidly in the world and the predicament. I enjoyed the contrast between the two western towns that shows some nice world-building between an up-and-coming western town and the one run by the no-good sheriff in the town next door.I enjoyed the way the plot wove together and the way the largish cast of characters was handled. Each character has a unique voice and they aren't all pulling in the same direction.A fun read.See all 18 customer reviews...
