HillerIt wasn't what I was expecting. With that said, maybe I wasn't sure what to expect. The Bible doesn't have too much to say about Eve, so the author had much literary license to take to be able to fill an entire book about her. However, I do remember in one instance she says God tells Eve that He will increase her pain of child birth in the version I have it only says that "I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children." The author says that evidently if God is going to increase her pain, then it must have already been painful. In my version, it doesn't allude to it being painful prior to the fall. The author also seems to think that Eden had thistles thorns prior to the fall. My Bible states "Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat of the plants of the field." Maybe Ms. Elliott intended to veer so far from scriptural truth to make the book more "enjoyable", but for me it ruined it.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Excellent NOVEL with solid biblical principles and exceptional writingBy John Thornton"Eve: A Novel of the First Woman" by Elissa Elliott is very well written. Each chapter is from one of the character's perspectives. Remember in Genesis 5:4 it is said Adam and Eve had "others sons and daughters" and we do not know their names. So in this novel Eve and her daughters: Naava, Aya (my favorite character in the novel), and Dara are the characters whose perspectives tell the plot of this imaginative and engaging tale. Each character is penned in a bit of a different literary style. At first I wondered how well that would work, but by the first 50 pages or so I knew it was an excellent choice in how to tell the story and carry the plot. It is a huge credit to Elissa Elliott's writing ability that she was able to use this tool in such an effective manner.Eve's other children are also discussed, Cain, Abel, and other sons, but the Eve and her daughter's perspective are how the novel is unfolded.Yes, it is a NOVEL, so of course it is fictional. In the "Afterward" Elissa Elliott writes, "As you already know, the skeleton of the Adam and Eve story is there in Genesis. I have had to bulk it up with fat and bones. Fictional fat and bones...." The "Afterward" is really an excellent part of the book and helps the reader to understand the whys of the story.Many deep spiritual questions are brought up. The characters are very well developed and each struggles with faith issues, family issues, and personal issues. This makes them especially endearing and realistic.As a born-again Bible believing Christian, I found the book to be reverent toward God and toward the Bible, and yet not at all "preachy."Will this book challenge some people's concepts Perhaps. But the Bible itself only gives us a rough picture of Adam and Eve, and this novel makes a very plausible possible picture of their times.Some questions that came to mind while reading. What was the Garden of Eden really like Was there work there, prior to the fall Was there some kind of "cycle of nature" in the Garden of Eden How did Adam and Eve perceive their status both before and after the fallThen the theological questions. Why did God favor Abel's offering over that of Cain Why are some people born with disabilities Are they less loved by God What was "the serpent" like in the garden How does evil fit into the world Is God unfair Is God distantHow vastly important is forgiveness and mercy and is there a competing struggle between mercy and justiceYes, many deep spiritual issues are wrestled with in this novel and they echo the wrestling biblical characters did. There are shadows of Elijah, Noah, Job, David, and others.The vivid imagery an beautiful descriptive word pictures used makes one really want to have seen that Garden of Eden, and walked with God.I truly enjoyed reading "Eve: A Novel of the First Woman."1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Satisfying and wholeBy Auditing AnnieIf your a fan of historical fiction, you can't go further back than this. I was a little worried that religion would be shoved down down our throats, but it was not! While the nature of the book does indicate that God does play a majority role in Eve's life, this book is about Eve, and her struggles with her isolation from the love of God, her lifelong desire to go back to her beloved gardens, and loss of her several of her children and eventually her husband Adam. I felt deeply Eve's pain when her son Cain killed her beloved Able, and rooted for her when she had marital problems that she worked diligently to repair with Adam. This was a very satisfying book that takes you from her beginnings in the Garden to her death as an old women telling her story.See all 38 customer reviews...
